Tiles and slate are distributed worldwide, sweeping across the fields of mansions and custom homes. So what is a rock plate? What are the advantages and disadvantages of slate and natural marble? Let the editor take you to understand!
What is a slate?
Rock board, described in English as’ SINTERED STONE ‘, means’ sintered stone’. It is a super high-quality decorative board made from natural food raw materials that require a special processing process, using a press of over ten thousand tons, combined with advanced production enterprise technology, and fired at high temperatures above 1200 ℃. It can withstand cutting, drilling, polishing, and other processing and development processes more effectively.
Advantages of rock slabs:
- 1. The ultra-thin version of rock tiles is only one-third of that of traditional architectural tiles. Rock tiles are lighter and can even be less than one-third of that of traditional production tiles. The average unit weight of the traditional tile industry is 23-27kg/㎡, while the average added weight of ultra-thin rock tiles is only 7kg/㎡, making it easy to transport and install.
- 2. The Mohs hardness of the stone slab can reach 6 levels. Compared with natural stone, ordinary quartz stone, and wooden boards, it has the advantages of ultra-thin and light weight, large specifications, strong molding, diverse colors, strong pollution resistance and durability, high temperature resistance, formaldehyde free, green environmental protection, and simple construction. Nowadays, most household items are used for background wall decoration, cabinet counters, countertops, etc.
Disadvantages of rock slabs:
- 1. The price is on the high side. The current market is limited. Most people don’t understand. It depends on whether the public can accept it.
What is natural marble?
The formation of natural marble is a long process. Natural marble is a metamorphic rock formed by high temperature and pressure in the crust of the central plain. It is a kind of medium hard stone, mainly composed of calcite, limestone, serpentine and dolomite. Its main component is calcium carbonate, accounting for over 50%. Natural marble has many ingredients. Other ingredients include magnesite, calcium oxide, manganese oxide and silicon dioxide.
Advantages of natural marble:
- 1. Natural marble has a dense texture but is not hard, making it easy to process, carve, grind, and polish. After polishing, marble is smooth and delicate, with a natural and smooth texture and high decorative value. Marble has low water absorption, high durability and wear resistance, and can be used for 40-100 years.
- 2. Natural marble with different textures has a fine and solid organizational structure, and after polishing, it is as smooth as a mirror. The texture is more stretchy and beautiful than granite. The requirement for compressive strength is high.
Disadvantages of natural marble:
- 1. Marble generally contains impurities, and calcium carbonate is easily weathered and dissolved by the action of carbon dioxide, carbides, and water vapor in the atmosphere, causing the surface to quickly lose its luster, so it is generally only used for indoor decoration.
- 2. Due to its large weight, natural marble walls are not an easy task. If not handled properly, it is common to break them down: the gap between the two pieces is large, and it is difficult to connect, making seamless stitching impossible. The permeability is also high, and stains are difficult to clean. The elasticity is insufficient, and cracks can occur if hit hard.
- 3. Natural marble has radioactivity, which is a characteristic of many stones. The harm of natural marble mainly comes from its internal radioactive material radon. Radon is a colorless and odorless inert gas that is usually difficult to detect. It is released into the air and inhaled by the human body, increasing the risk of lung cancer, leukemia, and respiratory system diseases. Qualified natural marble strictly controls radioactivity and does not pose any harm to the human body.
